what i’ve been working on…shabby stockings for christmas

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

christmas in july? you might be thinking  that i’m sooo far ahead of the game, right? the truth is, i’ve been thinking about making these for YEARS and i’m just now getting to them. ha!

i love working with used and salvaged materials. upcycling the old into fun and fabulous new is so fun.  i absolutely adore how old neckties look all mismatched together so i took a handful of necktie scraps and used a wide zig zag stitch to sew them together into a panel.

then i cut out my stocking. 1 piece from the necktie panel, 1 piece from a black twill for the back, 2 pieces from a thin cotton for the lining. i also cut the cuff from the black twill.

i did this all quick and dirty because i wasn’t sure if i was going to like the style and really, this was just a test piece. i laid the front and back together with right sides facing. then i sandwiched them with the lining pieces on the outside, wrong sides facing. i serged it all together in a stack with one seam all the way around but leaving the top open. i turned the stocking and then attached the vintage lace to the cuff, sewed the cuff to the stocking, hemmed it and turned it down. last, i sewed on a piece of vintage black ribbon to hang the stocking from the fireplace. done!

i think it turned out pretty cute for a test stocking. it’s still hanging above my fireplace, waiting for christmas to arrive! i like the cute pointy toe style but i think i’m going to try a rounder toe. you know, so more gifts will fit in them! it will be fun to make these for the whole family as keepsakes and reuse them every year. they can be personalized by using glitter glue to write names on the cuffs.

things i will do different next time: since this was a test piece, i only used the neckties for one side. when i make them for my family, i will use ties for the front and back. i’ll also insert the ribbon into the seam of the cuff so that it’s sturdier. i think i will make them with round toes or make the whole stocking BIGGER to fit more goodies in them. i’ll post again when i make round two!

my new machines

Friday, September 10th, 2010

here’s what they looked like straight off the truck! pretty heavy duty, and they were bolted to the pallet and everything. they weighed in somewhere around 500 lbs all together. for some reason, i thought they would come separately and magically be carried straight into the house. ha!

i cleared a space for them by moving everything to the perimeter of the room:

here they are all set up in a “U” shape so i only need one chair. there are 4 machines set up now but i need space for one more…

this is why i wanted the industrial serger: it serged a stack of 3 ties together like they were butter! my home machines can’t even think of trying that.

now that i’ve made a complete mess of my sewing studio, i should go clean it up a bit. but instead, i’m going to go sew something!!

“dust storm” playa hoodie scarf

Friday, August 7th, 2009

"sand storm" hoodie scarfyou asked for it!  some of you who are fans of my hoodie scarves had expressed concern over taking your favorite hoodie to burningman this year.  mostly out of fear of “playafying” it.  well, here’s a great solution!  this hoodie is made from super soft, reclaimed, playa colored fleece.  i made the scarf ends longer than the other designs so that when that dreaded (or excitingly anticipated, depending on your perspective…) dust storm hits, you just wrap it over your nose and tie it tight in the back and viola! you can carry on with whatever mayhem you were up to.  the one pictured has a beautiful turquoise, vibrant burgundy, and brown thread.  i can not garauntee thread colors unless you place a special order which i would be more than happy to accomodate.  click on the photo to see more on my flickr site. these hoodies are being sold for $34 and cost $4.50 to ship.  let me know if you want one!

when i’m not sewing…

i like to hoop!

i made the pants i’m wearing out of a house robe that i acquired from a thrift store. i am also wearing one of my upcycled collars and a bracelet, both made from neckties.

at the Art Walkwow, the last three weeks have been insane for me!  i worked sew hard to prepare for the Divisadero Art Walk that i didn’t really have time to think of anything else.  the Art Walk was a huge success.  i had such a great night and i owe it all to my boyfriend for helping me set up, the wonderful strangers who expressed their interest in my work, and my wonderful friends who showed up, bought stuff,  and hung around all night.  i am truly blessed.

during my mad dash to complete everything, i managed to knock out a couple of vests made from neckties.  everyone seems to be excited about them and i have two stores waiting for me to create more to leave with them.  they’ve been labeled “perfect for burningman”.  i’m really excited about them to, i think they look awesome and i would wear them on and off the playa!

the first vest i made is a women’s size small (or size 4).  i had a momentary lapse of reason when i decided to patchwork all the pieces together to make the yardage before cutting out the pieces.  i say this because i used a different stitch for every piece and it took me 12 hours to complete the vest from start to finish!  patchwork vesti plowed through five bobbins which really translates to ten bobbins worth of thread (top and bottom thread).  i don’t know how much thread that really equates to but i’ve never used sew much on one garment before.  which is funny because the garment is relatively small.  it definitely looks incredible and now i know what my machine is capable of, that’s for sure.  i know, i’m a nut.  i don’t think i’ll use that method again in the future because it’s way too labor intensive.  too bad it doesn’t fit me (i’m an extra small) cuz if it did, i’d wear it to death…if you happen to be a size 4 or size small, you can purchase the vest here.

after spending sew much time on that garment, i decided that there’s got to be an easier way to construct them, but have it look just as amazing.  the second vest i made is a men’s size medium.  i used a total of 16 ties and the pieces i chose were much bigger this time.  vest made from necktiesi also decided to use only two stitches: a feather stitch to quilt the ties together and a fun, criss cross in the shape of a boxy X to go around all of the edges.  well, three if you count the serged seams during construction.  it turned out fantastic!  i couldn’t be more pleased with how it looks.  i lost track of time but i’m guessing that this garment took somewhere between three and five hours to construct from start to finish.  that is waaaaaaay better than 12 hours!  i think i can now streamline the process and get it done in three hours tops.  this one’s not for sale yet, i’m using it as a show piece to sell the stores on my idea.  but, i will be working on a men’s size large next, and they will be available for sale shortly thereafter sew stay tuned!

versatility

another way to wear the collari love the versatility of this collar!  as you may have seen it in the previous post, it wears much like a shirt collar.  or you can wear it upside down, as pictured here.  i can’t stop wearing this thing! i’m sure i’m gonna wear it out in a month, it’s my favorite accessory right now.  lucky for me (and possibly you!) i made 15 more today, i just need to set the snaps and line up a photo shoot.  busy busy busy!

flirty skirt!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

or maybe i should call it a butt cover, it’s kind of short. the design is not mine but i made this adorable skirt from scraps! it can be worn with the fringe on the side or all hanging in the back. it has been serged together with shiny, sparkly thread. click on the photo to see more views and how i constructed it. i intend to make booty shorts and a pair of short pants that match to go under it. stay tuned!

i love sock pockets!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

pattern for felt pocketi have a firm belief that within every outfit i wear, there should be at least one pocket!  even if it’s in my socks.  during the recent heat wave, i didn’t really feel up for sewing but i managed to crank out these two different styles of pockets.  for the black pocket, i used black and white felt with silver thread.  i free handed the skull and cross bones, cut it out, glued it to the felt, then hand sewed it down with a metallic black/silver thread.  in doing sew, i created the outline of the teeth.  cut off the end of a tie for a pocket it is the perfect size for business cards, credit cards and a drivers license. perfect for when you’re out clubbing or hooping but don’t have any pockets. you can slip this slender pocket into your boot or sock to hold a few necessities. pretty cute! the black and red pocket is made from the wider end of a necktie. the funny thing about neckties is that they are by no means exact. the point isn’t exactly in the middle like you would expect. front of the pocketsbut not to worry, when used for a pocket it gives the finished product more personality and a true one-of-a-kind look. to make this pocket, i serged the raw end of the tie together and folded it into the inside before sewing all around the edges with a sparkly silver thread. then i added a snap to make it secure.back of the finished pockets looks pretty good i think. this pocket is slightly bigger than the other and can easily hold a house key, id, credit cards, and money all at the same time. maybe even more. it also fits into my sock or boot and works well as a change holder in my purse. i could make a longer tie pocket and use it for an iphone or ipod cover. the possibilities seem endless. who wouldn’t love a cute homemade pocket that is also keeping an old necktie from ending up in a landfill? i love upcycling, everyone wins.
