what i made today…a new skirt

Monday, July 11th, 2011

i LOVE thrift store shopping. it feeds the monster (you know what monster i’m talking about…) without fear of “accidentally” spending my daughter’s college fund money. lately, i’ve been finding really cute and comfy skirts that fit me just right! here’s one of my favorite new thrift store skirts:

super comfy

i took a pattern from it and used a dressier fabric to make a copy of the skirt. check it out:

my new favorite skirt

the skirt is cut on the bias and has a built in sash. it twirls nicely and feels light and airy. perfect for summer time. i wore it on the 4th of July because the silver reminded me of fireworks!

what have you made lately? feel free to share with me in the comments below.

i made this wrap around skirt out of 5 burgundy neckties and added a handmade, super sparkly ruffle. i used purple thread that matches the purple sheen on the ruffle. it fits up to size 40″ hips. want it? you can buy it at Trunk, SF or email me to request a custom skirt.

necktie skirt

IMG_2799i made myself a skirt and top (and a coat too) out of neckties a few years ago to wear to burningman. click on the picture to see more. i wore it for a couple of years out on the playa and even for a few hooping events. i’ve always dry cleaned it and been a-m-a-z-e-d by how clean it comes. hand washing scares me with these because they are vintage and who knows what will happen to the silk?? anyway, i sold *my* skirt at a recent sale (room to make me a new one!) and received really positive responses to them as a whole. new tie skirt! i thought i’d make a bigger size for all you ladies that expressed interest! this one accomodates hips up to 38″ and is held in place by a plastic belt buckle and a few strategically placed hook and eyes (that can be moved for a custom fit) on the inside. i made the ruffle from a vintage slip and some soft brown netting that i hand gathered. i left the gathering thread in the ruffle because it looks cute! it’s a true one-of-a kind! you can buy it here. or you can email me to place a custom order.

flirty skirt!

or maybe i should call it a butt cover, it’s kind of short. the design is not mine but i made this adorable skirt from scraps! it can be worn with the fringe on the side or all hanging in the back. it has been serged together with shiny, sparkly thread. click on the photo to see more views and how i constructed it. i intend to make booty shorts and a pair of short pants that match to go under it. stay tuned!
