a gift…

img_6451i made this bracelet for my boyfriend today. i especially love the color combination of thread i chose to serge the end with. two different color blues, green, and yellow. he is my number one fan and sew very tolerant of the messes i’ve been making due to my bursts of creativity. img_6447you have to understand, we live in a studio apartment and everything that happens in the house, happens in our main room: eating, sleeping, hooping, sewing, poi spinning, working, entertaining, living, etc… sometimes, i get sew caught up in creating that i’m not able to clean up after myself for days! img_6455my boyfriend comes home and that’s when i realize the whirlwind of a mess that i’ve made. i do my best but boy, does the mess pile up! sew, in honor of his tolerance, this one’s for him.

flower fun

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

i made another set of flowers, this time using two different ties for all three. one flower from one tie, another flower from the other tie, then i serged the two fabrics together to make the last flower. it’s a really cute, versatile set. they look fabulous clustered on a hat, worn individually on your shirt or hip, or even pinned to the strap of your favorite bag.  click on the above picture if you want to see more.

tie flower pin the first flower pinanother pin prickcute tie flower pin

wait…it never left!  who wouldn’t love a cute, colorful flower pinned to their favorite jacket or bag?  i absolutely enjoy these flower pins, they make me smile every time i see them.  they are made from  leftover hoodie scraps and old ties that i cut up.  i tried to use ties that i thought were ugly (because i was experimenting and didn’t want to *waste* the good ties) but as it turns out, even ugly ties make cute flowers.  lesson learned.

i worked all day yesterday on these pins and man, it was not easy (the beer could’ve made it harder but i’m not sure).   i must’ve made at least five and i didn’t feel completely satisfied with any of them.   while hand sewing them together, i managed to make myself bleed three times (again, could’ve been the beer).  by trying many different lengths and thicknesses of the fabric i finally created a combination that worked to my liking.  now i’m armed with the knowledge of what doesn’t work, that’s for sure.  and come to think of it, i’ve never tried to gather anything by hand before.  this whole process was by trial and error; my favorite way to learn.  anyway, today i decided to give it another go and look how cute it turned out =)

ok, i’m off to sew more flower pins so i can cluster them together and put them on my hat.

i sewed five more tie bracelets today. each one is a one of a kind creation, sewn with a fancy stitch and sparky thread. i decided to leave them unfinished sew they can be custom fitted to fit any buyer. it’s difficult for me to imagine selling them because i absolutely love each and every one. but on the other hand, i enjoy the possibility of creating wonderful and unique treasures for others who appreciate hand made goods…

i made this bracelet out of two ties. i cut the ends off and sewed them together before adding the snaps. i’ve been making them for years and have given many away as playa gifts. they’re so fun because each one is unique and funky. using the serger and sewing machine together has definitely changed the quality of the finished product for the better. i love my serger!
